It's not just C-clamps. In fact, there's countless web sites out there that
have step-by-step "fixes" for bad solder joints on Apple IBook G4 laptop
logic boards. One good one is here(complete with photos):

http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/

His way is to put "shims" on top of the offending component to press down
and restore function...not the best fix to be sure, but a lot of owners
thanked him for sharing his fix. If you scroll down to the bottom of the
page and then click on "128 comments", you will see that there are quite a
few owners that are having serious issues with their IBooks. There was one
gentleman who had tried the shim method three times with limited results,
and then on the fourth repair he realized that he needed to resolder the
offending component. Here's his story (with photos) at the below link. I
admire his creativity with his use of binoculars! :^)

Prior to these problems, there was also an issue with the ATI video
processor BGA in which Apple instituted an extended repair program to
replace the logic boards in certain IBooks. But that warranty expired in
2005. Here's a rather inventive way to repair the BGA on logic boards that
are outside the warranty period:

I wondered if the BGA was lead-free, but could not find the datasheet for
it...

Subject: Re: [LF] [TN] RoHS compliant laptop with early failure

Hi Joe,
Sorry to say their is an epidemic of of failing laptops.
The Danish government is going after Apple, there is a class action against
Sony, I also heard about problems with HP and Dell...and to my knowledge, it
is
all SJ failures.
I do not know whether it is LF or laptops getting smaller and with more
functionality and running hot—most likley some combination. I have ssen
pictures of
people using C-clamps on laptop housings to be able to start their laptops—
putting pressure on the SJ fracture surfaces to make electrical contact.
It seems, DfR has never been heard of by this people.
However, your laptop takes the cake for customer...on the other hand, I have
heard of DOA's right out of the box at distribution centers.
