We use different flux / flux cored wire solder “sets” for hand soldering and touch-up for different customers with the same Sn63Pb37 solder alloy.

Our customer has experienced a “wrong flux used” failure. As part of a root cause and corrective action response we’ve identified a number of likely causes (multiple flux bottles at a rework station, etc.) and are implementing preventative measures.

Of the less likely, but possible, causes we’ve identified are cross contamination from the hand soldering iron or soldering iron sponge. The flux we should have used ORL0. The flux apparently used is ORH1.

Is cross contamination from the soldering iron or sponge possible?
