We have both Feinfocus in the lab and Agilent 5DX in the production line.
They are very good and helpful almost all applications, but I never
succeeded to see by x-ray the defect we can see in Steve's site
http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/LP_BGA_Crack.jpg
This is very frustrating and performing the cross section always showed the
defect as being too narrow in order to be detected by x-ray.
If you want to include such a defect in your requirements, I am very curious
to see answers . Maybe the technology evolved since we bought the equipment.
If not, I agree with all the reccomendations .

Thanks Dave!

You wouldn't believe how tight our get informed-compare-buy schedule is. To
give you a hint: it can't wait until April :-)

Thanks for your feedback,

Ioan

Hi Ioan! There is quite a bit of excellent X-ray equipment available on the
market and a trip to IPC APEX would be one good way to evaluate multiple
equipment vendors at one time! You need to decide just what capabilities you
want in an X-ray system because the more capability, the greater the cost.
We use Glenbrook Jewel Box 90 systems in our manufacturing facilities -
good, rugged systems with good overall capability for voids, shorts, etc.
and we use Fein Focus in our Failure Analysis laboratory - very high tech
system for the necessities of failure analysis investigations. My
recommendation is pull together a list of "must have" and "would like to
have" system capabilities, match that to you budget and use the APEX
opportunity to conduct your evaluations of the various X-ray system
suppliers. Good luck.

[TN] X-Ray equipment

Dear Technos,

One more topic: what are your experiences with X-Ray equipment? Which
brand/model would you recommend or not advise?

We are a typical EMS and would like to inspect as accurately as possible
BGAs and leadless. So voids and hole-fill measuring capability is
desired. If possible, we would like to be able to localize an open BGA
joint.

Not exactly looking for big budget laminography machines like the 5DX,
but it should at least be 2D plus rotation capability. Or a regular, not
so loaded 3D system...

On-line and off-line answers welcome.

Thanks,

Ioan
