Depending on the size of your operation, the ROI on equipment, components you need transferred, and turn time (to name a few variables) you may choose to purchase a tube to tape transfer device, or, use a supplier. Some equipment manufacturers that were around a few years ago were: Systemation/RVSI, V-tech, Ismeca, Microvision. If you choose to send the tubes off to be taped and reeled I would recommend OX3, but, there are others who provide equal services. You may also request your supplier to provide the comps in Tape and Reel.

Keep in mind, there are pros and cons to both. Also, Tape and reel may be difficult if working with MSD's.

In either case (buy or farm-out)you will need to pick your battles. If you buy equipment you will have the capability in house. But, if you buy equipment, you will need to program and maintain the equipment as well as the support materials (cover tape, pocket tape, HIC's and Desiccant if necessary). You will also need the tooling for each of the package sizes for the machine to handle them properly. And, don't forget to consider the cost to run and the cost to change-over for different size packages. And, keep in mind that each time you transfer a component, you risk damaging the leads. You may also want to invest in a pull tester to make sure the cover tape is adhered properly (even if you pick to use PSA cover tape rather than Heat applied tape).

With an outside supplier you will deal with lead times that includes time to pack and ship, time to get in their queue, time to receive back in. This will add a minimum of 1 day if local up to a few weeks (even if local.) IF they do not have the tooling to support the package that will add lead time.

Subject: [TN] SMT Tape and Reel options

Dear all-

Our operation is two fold 1- repair (90% of the business) and 2- New
products (10% of business).

Recently we have brought Automation to our operation for new products.

Since we have a huge repair operation most of our parts are purchased in
tubes.

With the introduction of automation we would like to transfer the tube to
tape and reel.

Any input on equipment or services to do this would be great. Ideally a
machine to do this would be great.

Thanks in advance.
