Ed,
This is a summary of the correct formulae from all I have read in response to your
original question. I hope this clarifies the various responses (some were incorrect, including
my original response which described a closed cylinder, but listed the formula for an open
one). I apologize for the error.
Closed (right) cylinder (unopened can, including the ends):
SAccyl = 2 * pi * r ( r + h)
Open (right) cylinder (a tin can with top and bottom removed & not included):
SAocyl = 2 * pi * r * h
Volume of a (right) cylinder:
Vcyl = pi * r^2 * h
Where pi = 3.1416 (approx)
r = radius of the cylinder (in the same units as the height)
h = height of the cylinder (in the same units as the radius)
* (asterisk) denotes the multiplication operation
SA = Surface Area
SAocyl = surface area of an open cylinder
SAccyl = surface area of a closed cylinder
