Not sure if this really should stay on the reflector or not...

Is hard to say. On one hand, payment is for services rendered. OTOH,
there is some implication--the company wants to keep your expertise, and
you want to keep your (future) income, so hopefully there is an implied
contract for furthered employment. It's touchy feely, but I'm not sure
if we'd like the results if it was fully spelled out (in the form of a
multi-chaptered book of rules and regulations).

Going back to an earlier post, for myself, in some ways, being at the
other end of the spectrum (younger-ish), I look at the ongoing recession
as a good sign that I oughta pay my house off, and get into a position
where, if need be, I could live on half of what I make. 'cuz the odds
are good that a couple decades from now--well, who knows what will
happen. In some ways I almost expect now to have to change careers,
since I'm not sure if a company will want to pay for my decades of
experience (when I'm in my 50's or 60's). Certainly not some company
that I want to join (after being in the unemployed ranks).

In some ways, I wonder if I should just assume I will have to start a
new career path later on in life. Maybe I would have an easier time
starting a new career, rather than looking for a job that uses my
decades of experience.

Subject: Re: [TN] laid off

Hi,

I have been working on my own for some 15 years, had some startups I
was
involved with but no regular full time job. Sometime I had plenty of
work,
sometimes none.

I also just finished reading "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.

I do know the gut wrenching feeling of having to leave a startup
because of
other folks wanting to move in wrong (my opinion) directions.

But given 10, 15 or 20 years of "Service" what should we expect from our
employer / customer? What do we owe them? Is it really a dog eat dog
world
and that makes everything fair?

Did we get all we were owed as paychecks? What do we owe for the
time of
employment?

Should we simply "Take" what the employer is willing to Give?

I am curious as to what others think.

Bob K.
