One of the Galden fluids has a boiling point range of 255-265°C, I believe. Obviously 215-220°C is out of the question for lead-free solders (too hot for some, too cold for others).

Mike, your VOC free status may not be valid outside the USA. It will depend on the vapour pressure at ambient temperature in other countries. The EU Directives are stupid in this respect (as are many of them, the European technocrats having, apparently, little technical knowledge from the neck up). Assuming it is classed as a solvent, which would seem likely,
any organic substance with a VP of 0,01 kPa or more at 293,15 K (0,075 mm Hg at 20°C) is classed as a VOC. It matters not two hoots what its photoreactivity with NOxs is. In any case, the laws on VOCs. on both sides of the Atlantic, are totally irrealistic. As just one example, a hypothetical substance that is used at, say, 215°C in a vapour phase application
and is NOx-photoreactive would be a bad VOC, in practice, but may not be classed as such if its room-temperature VP is low. In fact, many flux components are bad VOCs, even when the flux itself is classed as VOC-free (e.g., many of the dicarboxylic acid activators). Not to mention political exemptions. The whole affair is rotten and unrealistic.

Is convection better? Who are the major manufacturers? Are silicon castments to keep the bottomside components from falling off mandatory? Any replies are GREATLY appreciated.
