Ernst,
We process double sided/PTH cards through wave solder from
time to time. Following is a short list of pointers we observe.

- Chip caps and resistors no problems, as long as they are presented side
on to the wave ,to prevent shadowing. ( We do have trouble from time to
time with larger bodied caps with small terminations causing solder skips).
- S08/14/16/20 OK as long as they are presented end on to the wave with
solder thieves on the trailing edge pads.Generally the finer the pitch the
more problems you are likely to face regards bridging.
- QFIC and PLCC. We don't wave solder these as they are very hard to get
consistant good results on. For these DSDP reflow and then selective wave
solder of the PTH parts tends to be the best option.
- SOT's are OK as long as trailing edge pads are elongated to avoid
shadowing by the part (and therefore solder skips).
- Fine pitch PTH connectors, presented end on to the wave, with solder
thieves on trailing pads to (to prevent bridging).

I hope this helps.

Regards Evan

Subject: [TN] Wave Soldering Mixed Technology CCAs

Hello Fellow Technetters.

I have little experience with thru-hole technology assemblies, as we build
mainly double sided SMT.

The question I have is:

Can SO8 /14/16/20 devices be passed thru the wave solder (on the
solder side of the PWB) without solder defects such as bridging? I have
read about "solder thieves" but have no details.

Does anyone have experience with wave soldering SMDs that they
could
pass along any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Ernst Wallisch
