Hello:
I know we've been asked to send our messages regarding
job postings to Melinda, so please forgive me if I add my
thoughts. I personally have no issues with job postings,
and I'm not afraid of headhunters. I also know that
scanning or deleting messages is not all that time
consuming. My problem is that I am on the road for my job a
great deal of the time, and the volume of technet mail is
getting unbearable in terms of phone line time. I just got
back from a business trip to Bermuda, for example, and
although the islands are pretty, there is no such thing as
an "800" number. I had to call direct from my hotel room,
and the charge to pick up 103 e:mail messages (91 of them
from technet) was $105! This is an extreme case, and
needless to say I waited 'til tonight upon getting home to
get any other e:mail messages, but I personally have no
interest in job postings. I realize their significance to
some of us, especially after reading my good friend Tom
Bresnan's response. This is why I think it's a great idea
to set up a "Jobsnet" for those of us who would get some
benefit from such postings. This avenue gives us the best
of both worlds and should keep everyone happy.
While we are on the subject of "technet"-iquette, I'd
like to ask everyone another favor. If possible, can you
crop your reply from the other posts on the same subject so
that we don't have to plod through redundant messages?
Perhaps some of you cannot do this, but it sure would save
alot of download time. Also, I think that sometimes
(especially when folks request this) we could reply directly
to the original postor, especially with things like phone
numbers and addresses that are requested, or "thank you"s.
Technet is great, most posts are fantastic (especially
when we characterize the subject), but I need your help in
cutting down on phone line time. We've come a long way -
people no longer post the same message to multiple IPC nets,
we've trashed the "PCB Gadfly", and most of us have learned
to subscribe and unsubscribe. Hey IPC, perhaps in the
standard subscribe/unsubscribe message at the bottom of our
posts, you could also list an address/phone number when we
get bounced messages, and also to eliminate the "just a
test" and the "I'm not getting any technet messages lately"
stuff.
Like I said, my concern is download time on the phone,
not job posting content. These are just some thoughts to
ease the burden of lengthy downloads. Thanks very much!

P.S.: I have a 28.8 modem, but the central modem is still at
2400 because some of my coworkers are still at this rate.
