Black oxide is just that, an oxide coating of the metal.

Black alloy plating is an alloy of the metal, usually the metal being plated
in Nickle, but also can be Chrome, etc. There is an alloying constituent,
that is co-deposited with the Nickle, which causes the Nickle (or Chrome) to
take on a black color.
