Eric,
Steve was having such a good time up on his soapbox. he forgot what
you were asking for! There are a few avenues you can take to get comfortable
and gain working knowledge of the wave solder process. The first is the
manufacturer of your machine, they should have classes available that cover
both operation of your machine and theory of the wave process. Electrovert
has an entire week long course that is dedicated to theory, process and
practice of wave and reflow. The next session will be held in Elgin IL,
September 27th. Even though it's a little over $2K, it's money well spent.
If you bought your machine new, the manufacturer should provide a couple of
free classes. Most manufacturers also have engineers on staff that can come
in-house to work with you if travel is an issue.

Another way is to take a seminar at a trade show such as SMTA
International. SMTA International in San Jose in September will be having a
couple of Technical Sessions on the soldering process, one taught by Les
Hymes and the other by Bob Willis. Though they lack the hands-on of a
manufacturers course, they can still provide insight into the theory of wave
dynamics and how to optimize your own specific processes. Consider joining
the New Mexico chapter of the SMTA, if you're not already a member. This
will allow you access to others within your area who can also provide
resources and insights to problems you may encounter as you develop your
processes.

Finally, there are a number of books and videos on wave solder. IPC
(http://www.ipc.org) has video IPC-VT-47 that covers the basics of the wave
solder process, and is excellent for training wave operators to understand
the wave process. It is also available as part of Library Set #7 that also
includes Process Guidelines and Technology Assessment Checklists. Bob Willis
(http://www.bobwillis.co.uk) also has an assortment of reference materials,
as do most of the industry gurus that provide seminars and training. You can
also check the SMTA Bookstore at http://www.smta.org for a variety of
reference texts from Klein Wassink, Howard Manko, Armin Rahn, Ralph Woodgate
and others. The more you learn, the more you realize how much there is to
know.

Good luck and welcome to the modern world....
