I'll ditto what Jeff said. About the only time we do not orient parts
in the same direction is when plane isolation forces the part
orientation to differ.

Subject: Re: [TN] Component Orientation Survey

As a matter of practice we try to place all of the polarized components
with the same orientation for two reasons. First 80%+ of our board are
hand assembled and this helps with assembler accuracy. And second this
makes trouble shooting that one-or-two of a kind assembly much quicker.
The reminder our assembly techs always give us is "You only have to
design it once, but I have to build it/trouble shoot it/repair it ___
times."

Subject: [TN] Component Orientation Survey

When you design boards, do you:
-lay out similar polar components oriented in the same direction for
ease of manufacture regardless of the shortest routing or -lay out each
component oriented in the best position for routing regardless of the
orientation of other similar parts?

We have a difference of opinion as to which is more prevalent practice.
