IPC-222X - Generic & Sectional Standards On Printed Board Design include the
perspectives of automated test in board design.

Recognize the growth in board complexity and size reduction have both been
expediential over the past 10 years, but progress in the automated test
community has been flat line. The test community's answer? SCAN, yawn.
What??? Yes, I'm still here. . ummm leading directly to automated optical
inspection, another programming nightmare. [So, the BIG dogs of ATE are
purchasing the AOI firms and doing what? An integrated ATE/AOI? Gawd,
where are the darn rusty razor blades? ]

Other points:
* SMTA published guidelines a few years ago.
* "Test & Design Strategies For Successful Testing Of SMT High-Density PCBs"
Hanson, RJ, Americom Test [800-650-3033], although little more than a
fleshed-out seminar hand-out, is the most coherent text on the topic.
* Old dogs gaze longingly at Scheiber "Building a Successful Board-Test
Strategy" as manna. So, thankfully Butterworth-Heinemann updated it in 2001
[ISBN 0750672803], although I have not seen the book. I'm still entranced
with the 1995 edition.
