Dear Dhswan:

Ventilation requirements for wave solder and reflow machines are given by the machine's manufacturer. This
information is important because in order to provide adequate fume removal, the required irflow is a one of the
main factors to consider. It is accepted that when removing fume from soldering operations using RMA flux a
HEPA filter is required in conjunction with a gas filter, usually activated carbon or a blend of acivated carbon and
potassium permanganate. Equipment is available that either removes the fume and recirculates the cleaned air
back into the environment or vents the fume to the outside through the ceiling. Typically, equipment that removes
fume and recirculates cleaned air back into the environment is preferred because of environmental concerns and
due to the additional heating and air conditioning costs associated with venting to the outdoors. If you have any
additional questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Patrick

I am having question related to lead:

what is guideline on handling exhaust/fumes from soldering Iron and
wave, reflow soldering machines. As far I know, most of assembly house
are blowing the fumes through their chimeney. Is it standard acceptable
practice???What is percentage of assembly houses using fume treatment
systems???

Is their separate exhaust / treatment system for cleaning stations
involving mist??

Two important aspects here are:

Human safety at workplace
Environment protection-for neighbors as well

>
> Health Canada is now soliciting comments on a proposed Strategy for
> Reducing Lead in Children's and Other Consumer Products. Health
> Canada is requesting comments by 15 October 1997.
>
> To summarize, the proposal attempts to restrict lead content to 15 ppm
> total lead in consumer products that may provide children with
> exposure to accessible lead. While the proposal lists specific
> products intended for children, it opens the door to possible
> restrictions on other products with which children may interact.
>
> Here are the specific guidelines being proposed:
>
> 1--Industry (manufacturers, importers, retailers, distributors) is
> responsible for voluntary compliance with these guidelines.
>
> 2--Lead should not be used in children's and other consumer products
> where exposure would result in a significant increase in overall body
> lead burden of the user during normal and foreseeable use of the
> product.
>
> 3--In general, where there is accessible lead, the total lead content
> of the particular product shall not exceed 15 ppm. . . .

> There is additional language regarding what steps will be taken to

> "Accessible lead means lead within a product or part of a product that
