My understanding is pin 1 was used as the orgin to help improve the ability to route using a grid
based router.  These days I don't think that is much of an issue with the newer gridless routers
that are available.  However if you have to do much hand routing and cleanup it is much easy to
maintain your spacing rules if you use a grid.  Hope this helps.
