What a great advice Joyce !; I remember butchering plotters learning flexes
;
on latest service shops (mobiles, cars,)do help :
Digging on board electronics from latest model S class smash rather puzzled
my favorite yard owner :
he didn't now how to price it !
Also, D: utilize sales guys ; as it's their interest : just flick your
fingers and you'll be buried under mountain of very quick references of
componentry catalogs (telling you a lot of other things on design line as
well :
As latest cap pads trends ; etc.).
And sail close to our fab friends ; their trade "secrets" are often
priceless .

go to electronic junk shop, like something called "active surplus" and look
at all the different design, PC boards, heat sink mounting, edge connector,
fine pitch, sockets, etc... I usually spend some time there just to get the
idea how the others doing things...If it is reject junk, all the better, you
can find out why is not working and why it is in the junk pile...It is
fun...
