Hi Rudolph:
- Bev's answer is usually the correct response, however, the decision on
whether or not to develop a company specific standard rests on your customer
base and your present and future processes and involves several
considerations. If you build predominantly IPC Class 1 Products a company
specific standard would probably be a waste of money. If you build primarily
IPC Class 2 products for a single customer then it also would probably not be
money well spent to develop your own standard. If you build Class 2 for a
wide range of customers, and/or you build Class 3 products, it may well be in
your best interst to develop your own standard.
- If you have contracts with DOD and need to define a Single Process
Initiative (SPI) and move all contracts simultaneously via a Block Change then
developing your own standard will pay dividends. I have developed company
unique standards which enabled the company to meet the requirements of both U.
S. and European Space Agencies while still allowing them to bid competitively
on less technically demanding products. If you are planning to market within
the EEC you will want to fold in IEC-61191 (Series) along with the IPC
document base we use here in this country. You can meet the IEC/EEC
requirements without going out of your way, or becoming non-competitive on-
shore.
- Like most everything else in life, there is not a digital (yea/nay) answer.
Hope this helps some. Contact me directly if you have specific questions I
can answer.
