Very true Larry, that is one of the biggest issues we run into when it comes
to coating: what needs to be coated and what doesn't. A drawing may have a
red outline around a connector stating that it is to be coating free. Some
take that as everything within that red box is coating free where others
understand that the red box just identifies the connector and that only the
mating area of the connector (pins, sockets, latches) are to be coating
free.

Doug, maybe you should look at taking some comments from the NASA standard.
They tend to be more specific on what is and what is not allowed. Let me
know if you need a copy.

Exactly.
How accurately can you place the tape?
Is there a tolerance on the drawing?
There needs to be a tolerance even for the best process.
It is best if it is explicitly identified so that so some incoming inspector
doesn't go "this nice sharp line is not exactly as shone on the drawing"
Other processes have the sane issue and require a larger tolerance..

Part of Dfx is to account for variation.
If it needs to be tight, little variation will be tolerated.
It will cost more to produce than one where the sweet spot of the process is
used and accounted for.
That is the trade off, identify what is required and what can be
accomplished.
Make the descion by choice, do the best you can to ameliorate any problems
and don't cry about it later because of the cost and inconvenience.
Feed back the results and change the rules if necessary.
