We purchased a software package about 2 years ago that is written
specifically for circuit board assembly. It is eM-Quality System from
Tecnomatix-Unicam in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is working very well for
us. Each board is serialized. You define the process steps for each board
type. Then you create a lot and move it through each of the process steps.
The software verifies that each lot is moved through the appropriate steps
for that board type. When the boards are tested, the operator can enter
test data for each board by scanning in the serial number. A picture of the
board is displayed, and the operator can select defects for components by
selecting the component on the graphic display of the board, or by entering
the reference designator. The board data (artwork, parts, part numbers,
reference designators, etc.) is read into eM-Quality System from the Unicam
job file used in auto insertion. It may be able to read in other types of
job files, too, though I haven't checked, since we use Fujicam/Unicam.

When setting up the software, you define the defects you want listed, such
as insufficient solder, excess solder, lifted pin, missing part, etc. The
operators enter the defects found on each board by the serial number. The
software package has a report module that allows you to run various reports,
including WIP, individual board by serial number, SPC, and pareto charts.
In the pareto charts, you can get overall line data and drill down to get
more detailed information about certain boards, defects, part numbers, or
several other parameters. You can define and save specific report
configurations so you don't have to enter the report parameters each time
you run them. You can run WIP reports to see where different board types
are in the process. You can also set up auto reports to automatically
generate reports at specified time intervals (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.).
The report output can be saved as html files for easy viewing, and can be
displayed at a workstation anywhere that is connected to the network. There
is also a box build module available for tracking components that go into
the top level assemblies. We don't have this module.

If you would like more information, check out their web site at
www.tecnomatix.com, click on the Electronics box in the upper right corner
of the screen. It looks like they now call this software package eMPower.

Subject: Re: [TN] Failure Reporting

From a data collection standpoint, you have the cheapest method to
use - don't collect anything and let you customers tell you what they think
of your quality.
Unless you are very good, or lucky, this won't work for long. If I
were in your situation, I would start by coming up with a common set of
nonconformances and track them as well as pass/fail information on paper
tick sheets at each of your process steps and enter it into Excel each
shift/day, etc.
Once you look at the data, come up with your first pass yield metric
and then pareto your nonconformances. Show your data to your production
folks so they know why they are entering it and start to use the data to fix
problems. If you have multiple inspection points, multiply those yields
together to get your total line yield. Then go find a finance person to tell
you what the cost of that yield and those nonconformances are and use that
figure, with your data, to convince your management to buy one of those
"more then they want to spend" software products that will do this in real
time. I bet you will save a bundle and have happier customers as well.

Regards,
Chris

Subject: [TN] Failure Reporting

Where I am working we have no means of collecting/tracking system failures
onour
units. I was wondering what other companies are using to track this
information? I know there are a number of software products on the market
but
the cost is more than the company wants to spend. Can someone direct me to
the
cheapest method to use?

Thanks in advance
Have a safe holiday
