Quad used KT-88s, and after KT-88s came Philips EL-34. Wished I still
had my VADEMECUM. The benefit with KT-88 was that you could lower the
anode voltage from +400 VDC to +250 VDC. I got a 400 Volt flash through
my body from these horrible (600 V) electrolytic capacitors. I tried to
maximize the output power by increasing the anode voltage from +400 VDC
to +500 VDC, with the result that one of the capacitors exploded. It
reminded of a geyser, and the electrolyte hit even my face. I realized
afterwards how stupid this was. I ought to use two KT-66 in parallel
instead. In total four tubes in the output stage. But you need a grid
bias balance network. Like trimming double carburators.

KT-66 had one unique and spectacular property: if you switched off the
room light, and used maximum grid amplitude, you could "see" the music
when the electron beam was modulated.

As I recall, after building a WM5 Heathkit Williamson amp using Mullard
(?)
KT-66 tubes, a later one was issued with KT-88s. Does anyone recall
these?
