I will have to file that one away for future reference. Perhaps the
Konform is a little more robust than the 1B31 to this kind of operation,
or perhaps we use too powerful a cleaning process.

Re: [TN] Washing dirty conformally coated boards

Hi Doug,

I've had some limited success with a wash system running Kyzen L5413 and a
30 second long wash at 100° F followed by a 30 second long DI rinse at
120° F. The boards come out 98% clean and if you'd seen what I started
with you would be amazed. Running a long wash or rinse (5+ minutes) does
a great job of stripping most of the coating off the boards. I believe
the reason we can't blow the schmutz off is there is just enough of an
element of oil that makes it stick.

Phil

Good morning Phil.

I don't think you're going to find one. Unless the Konform is a harder
more durable acrylic coating than the Humiseal 1B31 we use, I think you
will find the material to be embedded in the coating and washing will not
bring it out. The fact that you can't blow it off indicates that. We
have always had to globally strip the acrylic coating to get the "schmutz"
off, then recoat the board.

If I had to try, it would be with a very mild detergent solution such a
Liquinox.

[TN] Washing dirty conformally coated boards

Good morning,

We have some circuit boards that we coat with Chemtronics Konform AR, that
when returned from the field need to be washed to remove the
graphite/carbon and brass dust (it won't blow off). Washing and rinsing
at temperature tends to peel the conformal coating off. The currently
process is hand washing and rinsing, but it is a totally uncontrolled
process.

I'm looking for recommendations for a more controlled process that is less
likely to remove the coating. I just want to get the dusty stuff off the
board. It looks I'm going to have to create a machine or controlled
process the works at room temperature.

Phil
