Bill
I designed the CM-5 and MCM-2 and wrote the software under the name of
Protonique, a company I founded in Switzerland in 1975. The CM-1 was
launched in 1977, followed by the CM-2 a year later. This was available
for interpretation by a programmable calculator, this being replaced by
the HP-85 computer in 1979. The CM-5 looked the same as the CM-4 and
used many of the same parts. The CM-4 started, I think, in 1984 and use
the HP-86 scientific computer until it was discontinued in 1987; I did
an intermediate version, the CM-4a with a PC while developing the CM-5,
which was the best one, electronically and hydraulically, using the same
basic chassis and some components of the CM-4. In 1991, I transferred
the rights to the Contaminometer to Multicore. Their first reaction to
the CM-5 was that it was not in the Multicore colour scheme, as if a
paint job would not have sorted that out! They decided its looks were
not sufficiently "designer", and they conceived what was a small,
low-cost version, the CM-11, to replace my low-cost CM-3. I think the
only component in common to the older CMs was the conductivity cell,
although they did use the ballistic measurement circuit principle that I
had developed. Even the interfacing to the computer was different. When
they discontinued the CM-5, they had plans for a replacement CM-50, but
this never got off the ground. Then Multicore sold out to Henkel/Loctite
who wanted to divest all non-soldering materials and, eventually,
Concoat Ltd took it over and continued with the CM-11. Then Concoat
married the Humiseal people and the CM range was acquired by
http://www.gen3systems.com/cm.php - I think they sell only the CM-11 and
a version for small, fatter circuits, the CM-12. AFAIK, this is still
the original Multicore design. Quite frankly, I don't have a clue what
software the CM-11 is offered with. The original 1994 version, written
in C (the earlier models used a scientific version of Forth, with some
features of Fortran), used MS-DOS 6 as OS and worked very well. In 1995,
they decided they must have Windows 95 "because everyone was using it"
and I had nothing to do with its development but I do know they had
great difficulties with the transition because of critical timing
problems, which I presume they were able to resolve. I also assume that
some software improvements have been made since then. Gen3's web site
doesn't give much detail. Hope this historical review helps.
