Hi Jorge,

You have received some interesting answers. If you are referring to molded
package, surface mount, tantalum caps, yes, they can be wave soldered. In
fact we have a very large percentage of our smaller case size Ta chips
(A/3216 size and B/3528 size) that are routinely used by our customers on
the bottom side of the board in the wave. Most folks don't try to wave the
larger sizes because they are usually too tall and/or too heavy.

If you are referring to through-hole, leaded types, they can certainly be
wave soldered as any other through hole type - i.e., the part is mounted on
top side of board with leads through holes. Be careful not to let the
bodies of these parts rest on the PCB itself. The leaded types are all
assembled with SnPb solder making the internal cathode connection and it is
possible to reflow that solder - resulting in open circuits - if the bodies
get too hot.

And as these are solid electrolyte devices, they are not subject to the
"reforming" requirements of some types of wet electrolyte aluminum caps.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [TN] Tantalum Caps

Technetters,

I have a product that has Tantalum Caps, having them waved would make our
life easier, the board has some TH components we currently hand solder and
that could be waved. I know that there might be some reason not to wave
Tantalums, but I am not sure. Can Tantalum Caps be wave soldered?, Has
anyone done this?

Any responses would be appreciated
