Ken,
We have been looking at a Nikon ME600 measuring microscope. The measuring
is done via video, which adds about $8,000 plus computer to the cost. Base
microscope cost is ~$15,000, which includes bright field/dark field (~$1,300
more than bright field alone), top and bottom lighting, and 5x, 10x, 20x
objectives (up to 200x mag). We decided to put off getting the 50x ($2,700)
objective since it can be readily added later if needed. So, that may give
you an idea of some of the options and costs from one perspective.
But, there is no substitute for talking with suppliers and/or a demo of
equipment.

I agree 100% with your recommendations, although I think 80X might be one
too high. I remember asking not too long ago for a price. It is in the
$40k range for a decent scope.
