I had a similar experience at work; some HVAC technicians were fixing our
system, and the thermostat in the chemical lab had a few bad solder joints
that were intermittently open. I helped the technician fix the bad solder
joints, gave him a spool of Reliacore 15 solder, and told him to buy an
inexpensive soldering iron for his tool kit. Unlike Craig's technician,
this felllow had some years on him and should have known how to mend bad
solder joints.

Similar to Inge's Volvo story, I had a similar experience with the furnace
several years back; the furnace would just suddenly intermittently just
shut down.
The poor kid, and I mean a VERY young kid, had replaced one thing after
another over several trips.
The last culprit of course was the least accessible and least likely
(according to HVAC technicians) item - the simple circuit board assembly
that he replaced.
I took one look at it and a whole row of mechanical relay socket pins had
terrible cold joints. I took the opportunity to enlighten the young man on
what a good
solid shiny solder joint should look like compared to bad ones.
