Having been on both sides of the table, there's no good way to do it,
but some are just cruel. When I was at Square D in the late 80's, as
the company was being prepped to be sold to their new handlers in order
to make a very few people a lot of money, they laid off three
engineering groups in one day. I was asked to stay on and help with the
shutdown of the engineering department over a 2 to 3 month period, and
of course, not having any immediate prospects and a kid in college, I
did. I still regard that decision as one of the worst of my life.
Watching good friends and coworkers going out a few at a time over that
period was probably the most depressing thing imaginable. In
retrospect, I wish I'd just said "OK, see ya" and left that day.

The worst part is that they were incredible clumsy in handling it.
Several days beforehand, I got a call from a job shop I'd often worked
with wanting my resume. I was told my name was third on a list they
had, and sure enough, a week later, I was the third one called.

One of the worst layoff's I ever went through, even though I didn't get
laid off, was a big one where HR would get on the PA every half hour or
so and read off a list of the next terminations. This went on all day,
very nerve wracking and a VERY long day!
