        Stephen,
        First, let me say I agree with you in that the 5 deg tolerance is
too tight.  And though you can easily prove your point by siting standards,
it will not solve your confrontational problem.  You must remember you are
in a company that has "done it this way since day one".  If it has always
been that way, then somebody there has proven the machine is capable of
meeting the 5 deg spec.  You might consider looking into past calibration
records to see if the solder temp ever failed before, and how the situation
was resolved.  Without getting technical (since your inspector doesn't seem
to operate on that level), try to find if the procedures call out where the
probe is to be placed, and if the inspector followed the procedures.  No
matter what data you have to prove your point, the machine must have met
these specs in the past, or the issue wouldn't exist.
