Silicon Chips depend on the electric current moving in VERY controlled ways
to function, and ANY impurity within the Silicon can destroy functionality.
Chlorine gas can probably penetrate into the Silicon, and once there move
quite easily, thereby totally screwing up the functioning of the chip.

This problem of some atom, unknown, penetrating the chips, and fouling things
up, is why the chemicals used in chips have to purer than anything we in
circuit boards ever dreamed of. The most common problem is Sodium, and it is
often joked about, but never too loudly, that you could shut a chip
manufacturer down completely by walking in and just yelling the word
"Sodium".
