I assume you are talking about a flexible printed circuit (FPC). If
you have a single or double sided FPC the continuous flexing should
not be a problem. You want to make sure that the radius is about 10
times the thickness of the FPC. Do not crease the circuit as the
conductors in the creased area will work harden and will break very
quickly. An uncreased FPC will last indefinitely. You can also heat
form the radius by wrapping the FPC around a mandrel and placing in an
oven at 250-300 degree F for 30-60 minutes, removing from mandrel
after thorough cooling. If you want to discuss off line you can call:

Hello friends,
I have a question about the material Kapton. Does this material
deteriorate due to flexing (if used in a PC board). I want to use it to
wrap around a hinge on a small door that will need to close (where the
board will bend 180 degrees) and be able to open (where the board will
bend about 90 degrees). So the board will need to bend repeatedly
between 90-180 degrees. Will this hurt the board?
Second, can you just put a crease in the board and end up with the
board in an accordian like shape that would relieve the stress of the
opening and shutting? Does this compromise the integrity of the board
and the wiring? If anyone has any experience in this, I would
appreciate some suggestions. Also if you knew of a better technique or
material, I would be happy to hear them. Thanks a lot.
