Many years ago I used to wire backplanes for IC Burn-in chambers. The back
plane was rows of connectors and the connections were made with 6 gauge
solid wire. Each chamber had 10 backplanes, and those were all connected
with 2 gauge stranded wire.

We used a resistance soldering iron on the back planes and on the wiring.
The tip was a pliers type tip. It was hot enough to get the solid strand
wire red hot and melt it very quickly.

Hope this helps

Hi Graham,

Like Jerry I've never done it but I remember seeing someone solder very
large wire into a very large terminal with a small torch. I don't recall
anything more than that but I might lead you in a direction (kicking and
screaming :-)

Hi Graham,

I've never done this myself but watched it being done at a customers
site. The had to make a holder for the connector that had a temperature
controlled heater in it. I believe they used a 50 watt iron.

Subject: [TN] Wire Harness question - soldering 0 AWG wire?

Hello TechNet
I've been dragged (kicking and screaming) out of my comfort zone, and am
looking at a wire harness. I've got some 0 awg wire to solder into a
connector. We haven't tried it, but I really doubt that my Metcal
MX-500 system is up to this task. Do any of you have experience with
this, and if so can you recommend equipment or technique?

regards,
