Hi folks - here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element was first discovered in 1898. This element forms a black
nitride when exposed to air and reacts strongly with water. This element
is a "bone seeker" as the human body metabolizes this element in a
similar fashion to Ca and incorporates it into bone tissue elevating
cancer risks. The longest lived and most common isotope of this element
has a half life of 1600 years. This element was once widely used as a
constituent of self luminous paint but the radiation safety issues
eliminated this application. What element am I?

The Answer:

The element is Radium - Ra! Many people are familiar with the use of Ra
salts to product self luminous paints for watch dials until the radiation
issue was understood and the application eliminated. Marie Curie
discovered Ra in 1898 in U ore using a very serious extraction methodology
that included Hg distillation.

This winner of this week's quiz is Nigel Burtt with Aleks Lozinsky and
Dewey Whittaker running a very close second. Drew Meyer also gets bonus
points for the luminous paint information. Doug has too much duct tape
holding his cubical together so we don't have a quiz prize to send out as
we anticipated.

Everyone have a good weekend.
