I like this tip from Plato...

"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark. The real
tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." - Plato

Or this one...

"The learning and knowledge that we have, is, at the most, but little
compared with that of which we are ignorant." - Plato

I agree. Plato's tips have withstood the test of time.

Two things, when using a no-clean flux you will go through more tips
than you do when using a water soluble. Also, Plato makes tips for
different solder systems such as Hakko, Pace, Metcal, Weller and others.
I have found that Plato's tips last much longer than other tips. I was
told by other engineers that Plato started out as a plating company, and
that is one of the reasons their tips last longer. I don't know if that
is true, but they sure do last longer.

 Doug,
Surprised on your comment on the tips lasting longer. We have found that
we burn through the JBC tips much more quickly then the Metcal. I do
have to agree that the operators prefer the JBC though.......

Well Phil, Metcals are fine if you like burning through tips pretty
quickly. We are changing over to the new JBCs. Operators love em and
the tips last a lot longer.

Hi Roger,

Metcal....for soldering station selection.

The bean counters won't like it, but your operators will love you for
it.

Just make sure your operators are trained in how to use the equipment
correctly.

Learn how to spot bad tips and how to properly take care of the
equipment.

There are lots of options when it comes to desoldering and hot air
rework stations however.

Hope this helps...

Phil

Roger,
You just opened yourself to a mess of e-mails from sales people who
monitor this forum. I am not such a person.

I really like the Metcal irons. They are more expensive but I feel they
perform better than any other iron. I will catch a lot of flack for the
previous statement but hey, I have an opinion.

Good luck. Joel

I am looking to establish an electrical/electronic capability. I need
advise on the best solder stations to purchase for a general surface
mount, thru-hole new and rework capability.

I will want a variety of tip sizes, easy to change tips, adjustable
temperatures in some manner, good capacity (little temperature
fluctuation when you put the tip on high mass connections), no current
leakage, and no stray voltages.

Thanks,
Roger
