Will something like plain ol' acetic acid [vinegar], or a mild lye [NaOH]
also work?

I remember lecturing operators on how even spittle will take the [Al] bond
pads off an IC. I know it is not the same aluminum, but HF is certainly
nasty stuff and would heed Joyce's cautions

Electrochemical polishing plus HF etching. Not nice. My 2 cents (wear
double gloves. I got nasty burn before... thanks god I got live to tell the
story --- when I was young and stupid).
