Have a doctor to patient talk to your customer Phil :
The implications over 1" components on tape from both pick tool and custom
build (depth?)feeder view are complex ;
the level/travel/drag/exit implications will send yields diving from damages
unless you have it all right .
The trick on this large (custom) feeder is you have to come level under pick
; than bend down sharply to exit the bulk of base tape , = can be done ; at
cost ; check :

I'm a tape freak myself (bulks chip components too often); but on this large
I'd construct a shoot channel sitting on vibro plate and feed tubes into
throated slide . In past simple grounded(esd) curved(slightly) alu extrusion
did the trick .
If the pins are too fine you have to stick with trays (as you know); you may
push it with teflon film lining(still metering the esd) .

See you

PS
Let me know how you go ; interesting exercise

Subject: [TN] large component tape & reel

I have a customer who wants to find a contract tape
and reel vendor who can handle a 2 sided flatpak MCM
appx. 1.5" x 1.5"! Has anyone ever heard of such a
large component being put on tape/reel? Who could
handle this?

Resp.
Phil Hersey
