Dear Mark,
First, Jack, please forgive me for contributing to this non-electronic
manufacturing string, but this is interesting and I don't want to resist!

OK, Mark, you have got to be kidding. £30 sterling you say? Maintenance
free? Lasts forever? Well sure those are facts. I've never had to polish
my magnets. Not as good as a regular water softener? I think that is an
gross understatement. Or should I be saying overstatement? :) I think I
can buy the fact that for a few fractions of a second some of the iron ions
might partially align as they go whizzing by the magnet (at 30 - 60 psi that
water is MOVING!!), but they don't stay that way. No more than iron
fillings on paper are still magnetized once you remove the magnet from below
the paper. And even if the soluble ions did somehow become "magnetized",
how in the world would a magnetic orientation have any significant influence
on a highly polarizing, +2 or +3 charged metal ion which wants to chemically
precipitate non-magnetic sterates and other long chain carboxylic acids from
your soaps? Look, even 2 and 4 Tesla magnetic field pulses in a nuclear
magnetic resonance spectrometers can only hold the nuclear orientation of
atoms for less than ten seconds, usually. So how would a dinky little
magnet around a pipe make any difference to water sitting in a washing
machine for over 30 minutes?. This is voodoo science. No, I take that
back. I shouldn't have even graced these charlatans by coming anywhere near
them with a real word like "science". Do I seem a little tense, a little on
edge, well...maybe a bit. I have been fighting these guys for some time
now. I am tired of little old ladies giving up their hard earned and saved
money for things that don't work.

regards,
Bev Christian

As usual these comments are my own and do not reflect the position of the
company I work for, etc,., etc. And of course this statement does not imply
that said company is in favour of "magnetizing" water. :)
