We let three different persons perform the Scotch 600 test on thickfilm gold
on LTCC. The samples were all run in one batch. We got three variations on
the test, depending on how the tape was pressed on, what pull angle was used
and with what speed the tape was pulled. One guy pulled off nearly all the
strings and pads. Strings were 0.04 x 1.00 inch and pads were 0.1 x 0.1
inch. Very subjective, as you said. We have abandoned the test and go for
soldered pins on 0.1x 0.1 inch pads and use a Sebastian pull tester instead.

Inge

PS. Nowadays, we need not worry much about the adhesion. So, we have a whole
big box with 600 tape reels, which will probably end in everyone's drawer.

Lamar,

The (possibly apocryphal) tale about the adhesive strength required when
one of these adhesive tape tests was being written is that the engineer
concerned took a roll of conventional stationery Sellotape (translation
= Scotch tape) from his desk drawer and decided that that would
suffice.

As this is a reasonably crude go/no-go test with some subjectivity to
it, it might be OK to try the same!

Regards,
Peter

Subject: [TN] Adhesion tape test

I need help finding a suitable replacement tape to perform adhesion
testing per ASTM D3359, the tape test method.

The Permacel 99 tape that was mentioned is no longer available. We have
tried a replacement tape recommended by a tape vendor, but the backing
released from the adhesive during the test (the adhesive stuck better to
the substrate than the backing).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Lamar
