Giese,

We have successfully integrated PTH (Pin Thru Hole) connectors that are high
temp in our reflow process of cards which have SMT for all the other components.
D-shell, headers, and snap-in SIMMs connectors are included in the mix. The
smaller sized headers are automatically placed, and the balance are manually
placed prior to reflow. We use our standard no-clean paste for the application,
with larger deposits around the PTH pads to provide sufficient solder. There is
additional maintenance one can expect due to paste dropping in the oven, as well
as in equipment prior to reflow. Defect reduction has been tremendous due to
alleviation of the opportunity for solder bridges in the wave solder process.

Subject: [TN] SMT Connectors

Fellow Technetters,

with a lot of effort we turned 98 % of our designs to SMT. Only a few
components, mostly connectors are left.
Who can recommend companies who have:
- a very good selection of SMT connectors,
- experience in turning THT stuff into SMT or
- have gone the extra mile to make THT components work in Reflow.

Thanks in advance

Klaus Giese
