A saponifier, by definition, must be alkaline...
most saponifiers today, are based on Monoethanolamine, plenty strong to
attack aluminum, chromated, anodized, or whatever...
When you attack aluminum alloys, you leave behind the alloying metals, which
appear as a black "smut"...
