To answer your points Allen,

1 Firstly, I suggest that you read the EPA report it is VERY
comprehensive.

2 The WEEE directive in its own right has actually enabled
management of waste electronics.

3 Regarding lead in solders, I would like to hear from ANYONE on a
(validated case of)person or persons who has suffered from any form of
lead poisoning from lead in solder OR any "normal" waste disposal stream
where lead leaching into the ground has caused any documented
environmental impact.

And yes the group IS aware that there are some places in the world where
the lead readings are very high due to very primitive recycling
operations exploiting the local cheap labor population using primitive
recovery methods. If you want to see how business exploits these people
here is a link to the Greenpeace web site:

http://tinyurl.com/7ep5n

That however I believe IS a reasonable case for legislation and the
legislators would have my and others full support in stopping that
practice.

4 On the reliability issue, you are correct; reliability has been
identified as a potential issue resulting in an exemption for
telecommunications and internet infrastructure along with other areas.
It has been stated that the reason for this is to look at the results
and "wait and see" if the lead free solutions are actually reliable.

Which means that you, I, and the rest of the world are a beta site test
for a badly thought through, untested piece of legislature that a
Countryless beurocracy has unilaterally forced on the rest of the
World..... on the misguided but apparently correct supposition that to
do so would increase its world status as a "Green" and environmentally
aware political force..

John,

I don't pretend to be an environmental expert but if you read the WEEE
Directive you will see that the objective of the RoHS Directive is to
remove
hazardous substances in order to enable the management of the recycling
and
recovery of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, one of the most
rapidly increasing waste streams. This will have a positive impact on
all of
the environmental areas you quote as being impacted by change-over to
lead-free solder.

Regarding the reliability issue, the use of lead in solder in
applications
where reliability has been identified is an issue is either exempt or is
currently the subject of a request for exemption. I understand that
these
exemptions will remain in place until there is evidence that the
alternatives are reliable.

Regards

Allen

Thanks John!
I appreciate you putting all this together and look forward to its
continued

Good morning electronics industry!

For all of those people out there who cannot understand WHY we are
removing the lead in solders I have put up a web site as both a
discussion as well as an informational forum.

It makes some points and provides a feedback vehicle for those among us
who feel that it was not necessary and actually may be environmentally
detrimental.

And whether you agree with it or not please take the time to read
through it - the feedback is valued. If you like it, pass this email
along to your Colleagues.

Here is the link:

Kind regards,

John
