Dear all,

i start feeling comfortable as an leadfree advocatus diaboli, so here some
comments on joe's citations (with the source to which i refer at the
beginning and a short quote):
---
http://dep.state.ct.us/whatshap/Press/1999/ls0127.htm
"Three water supply wells were found to contain levels of lead that exceed
the Connecticut Department of Public Health action level for lead in
drinking water. The presence of lead in the water supply is attributable to
household plumbing, fixtures and pipes that contain lead based materials and
is not attributable to landfill leachate."
- My comment: Does "well" in this context mean the place where the water is
pumped out of the ground, or the place where you receive it at your home
(the tap)? (Sorry i thought i understand english quite good, but sometimes
its difficult) Where were the samples taken?

http://www.southbendtribune.com/98/dec/121698/local_ar/139902.htm
"Results released Tuesday from 13 of 14 water tests at seven nearby homes
showed traces of two heavy metals but at levels that fall far below the
federal standard.
One test disclosed a level of arsenic that reached--but did not exceed--the
50 part per billion federal threshold called the Maximum Contaminant Level
(MCL).
That water was collected Nov. 24 at a home on Jackson Road. The residence
was one of five homes where IDEM had conducted tests in 1988 and where trace
levels of lead and arsenic were found at levels above the MCL."
- My comment: Fine, now we know that the water was sampled at the tap. But
one test was ok, one above the MCL. What were the weather conditions, ground
water levels, any other boundary conditions? You cannot expect the
conditions of complex environmental systems like ground water to be
constant, in contrast to many technical systems we know.

"Lead does not readily accumulate in plants."
- Veto, Mr Compost! I know that tobacco for example tends to accumulate lead
at high levels. Thats why the smokers among us (including me) (...but only a
pipe, or cigar from time to time) (...cuban, sorry...) should not talk too
much about the dangers of lead; you will allways identify them by the high
blood levels of lead...
Tomatoes are relatives to tobacco (both solanaceae, i believe); i wonder if
there are similarities in lead uptake? Metabolism of higher organisms is
astonishingly variable sometimes.

"Other chemical reactions in a landfill can also change the state of metals,
allowing them to attach to other particles and travel with leachate."
- My comment: HEY! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS LINK!!! The quotation above
is about one of my hobbies... Seriously, i would like to learn more about
the transport of ad-/absorbed contaminants in soil and ground water (Lead a
candidate for this), but theres no way at the moment to include this in my
work.

Finally another point i totally agree:

"The greatest mistake one can make (in matters of the environment) is to do
nothing because one can only do a little"

Best regards,

khz
