Bob & LF Forum,
Are these symptoms a result of higher temps? Or is this moisture? Is the
higher temps going to require manufacturing to pre-bake comps and boards?
Thanks in advance,
Loa

Yes his is one of the parts that are vulnerable, I believe Rubycon and ROHM
have parts that are spec in the reflow range above 245C

Two problems we have seen are swelling of the package but not causing the
relief area to rupture. Also on one part the plastic base distorted which
would have lifted the terminations off the board. In the past some parts
have seen the rubber end caps fly out or distort at elevated reflow
temperatures.

All though not specifically related to lead-free there was a company that
made up its own electrolyte and got the formula wrong, one of those nice
failure analysis stories in one of the capacitor journals.

Hello Raisa,

We produced "leadfree" boards with Alu ElCap's (but these components were
leaded).
At 0 hrs and after some minor mechanical en thermal tests the components
didn't fail, although the package swelled a little bit.
But we still have to check the longterm reliability of the Elcaps.

Your question triggered me to ask our component guys if our supplier of
Elcaps is going to switch to leadfree.
I'll let you know .......

Recently, I heard that the current SMT AE caps would not be usable on
lead-free PCBAs due to the higher temps req'd. I also heard the suppliers
were not going to try to convert them ... we would have to re-design our
PCBs with some other type of cap.
Anybody have any more info on this?
