I was told on Monday by a very reliable source that a new draft was released ob 12 July but only lucky or unlucky people have seen
it. For a number of reasons we should try and get a copy as soon as possible !!!!

Subject: [LF] European Legislation

> Just to clear up on a couple of points.
>
> There is currently no legislation in Europe banning the use of lead in
> electronics assembly.
> There are however two pieces of legislation which have clauses banning
> lead in the pipeline (pardon the pun);
>
> 1 The end of life vehicles (ELV) directive - aimed at the automotive
> industry.
> 2 The waste in electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive -
> aimed at recycling of consumer, telecoms and industrial electronics.
>
> The ELV directive is now pretty much agreed for adoption by member
> states - it does however exempt lead in automotive electronics where a
> sufficient case can be made for the use of lead - however this
> exemption is to be reviewed on a year on year basis as I understand.
>
> The WEEE directive is currently in second draft stage and has clauses
> to phase out the use of hazardous substances in electronics such as
> lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and halogenated flame retardants by
> 1st Jan 2004. Nothing has happened for a while, probably due to a
> change at the top in the European Commision as well as intense lobbying
> from trade groups in Europe - the likely date for the publication of
> the next draft is said to be Autumn 99.
>
> Perhaps the most important point is that whether or not this legislation
