Hi Bev and fellow Leadnetters

These are some stories about Certificates of Compliance that we have come
across when auditing companies that may be of humorous interest.

1) CoC with a BGA - This part is lead-free, there is no lead in the part,
all the lead is in the balls under the part.

2) This part is RoHS compliant. We have done no testing to prove this and do
not intend to.

3) This part does not contain any of the 7 RoHS substances

4) Material testing report from a well known chain of labs proving RoHS
compliance, with a description on the report of "Electronic Component" This
report had a smudge on it and was submitted by the supplier as proof of
compliance for 34 different components.

5) A material testing report from a well known lab proving compliance
supplied with a connector. However the description on the report was "Red
liquid"

6) A client of ours sent a small box made of 7 separate pieces of steel to a
well known test lab. The metal pieces for the box were sourced from overseas
and not all from the same place. Seven reports were duly returned from the
lab, 3 pieces being compliant and 4 not compliant. However the description
on each report was "Shiny Metal part". There was no way of knowing which
parts of the box were compliant and which ones were not. - We now ensure
that all our test requests to Labs contain .jpgs of the part to be tested
and ensure the report from the lab also contains the .jpg.

5)During one audit we had suspicions on a lock mechanism - in fact it was
the one where the CoC mentioned the 7 RoHS substances, so we got a physical
part to visually check. Lo and behold the tongue of the lock looked like it
was chromated. We checked it with a spot test of diphenylcarbizide solution
that we had handy and it proved to be chromate. We phoned the supplier from
the audit "Hot Room" and the supplier said " yes we know its not compliant,
you've caught us out haven't you." Needless to say he is now an ex-
supplier.

All this shows that COCs need to be checked, preferably audited by an
independent party against defined acceptance criteria. Indeed the EU RoHS
enforcement agencys informal network guidance document states more than once
that if CoCs are used as a primary compliance method then documented
acceptance criteria are needed.

Hope some of this helps you Bev!

Roland,
Thanks! This is exactly the type of story I am looking for.

Hi Bev

We have found Cr6 as an anti-fingerprint treatment on stainless steel
refrigerators. It is transparent in that application and came as a complete
surprise. As it is applied over stainless steel that has a high Cr0 content
it is virtually impossible to test by screen testing. This was discovered by
querying the supplier.

LeadNetters,
I am sending this appeal to both TechNet and Leadfree.

I am writing a paper about the "stories" of RoHS testing. So I am
soliciting for interesting tidbits or full length novels that you would be
willing to share. No names of people, companies or products would of course
be used or shared with anyone else without your written permission.

For instance:

1) Has ANYONE found any mercury or cadmium in supposedly RoHS compliant
components?
2) We've found Cr(VI) - in LEATHER!

Regards,
Bev
