That's the truth.

Anyone out there in telecomm/internet infrastructure and 6/6 right
now??....I for one very much doubt it, if you take a look at the apple web
site they state that in terms of lead free soldering they are still working
on it. (they are probably already soldering with it but look at the comment
and form your own conclusions)

The difference is that the down-hole product life expectancy is a whole lot
shorter than that of a cell phone, a WAN router, telecom hardware, or
automotive electronics, being measured in minutes/hours, not years/decades.

John,
Downhole tools having been using lead-free successfully for years,
it's called Sn96 (actually 96.5/Ag3.5). Or lead-rich Pb85 and Pb93.5 (HMP),
depending on how hot the tool service temperature is. A pain in the behind
to work with, but immune from RoHS <g>....

Sounds like you are were having fun, down the hole logging probes I hope -
those are FUN to play with, haven't designed or built one in a few years
though.

For those that don't know down, hole probes for well logging is an
environment that makes space, military, or under hood automotive electronics
look positively benign.

If someone can get a logging probe to work reliably with lead
free..............it would make the rest of us very happy.......8-)

Rick,
Sometimes you have to be nuts to do what is required. In a previous
life dealing with PCBAs used for downhole drilling tools, it was common
practice to re-tin all components. The boards were soldered using a variety
of high temp alloys, any decent level of cross-contamination from tin-lead
components could cause parts to literally fall off the board during use of
the tools. We would re-tin using the same high-temp alloy, using a two stage
solder dip process. Handling damage? Sometimes. ESD? Kept in check by good
practices. Additional thermal excursions and thermal shock? Definitely, but
the lesser evil compared to parts falling off a $250K tool and halting an
entire drilling crew at $25K - $50K per day. Now that's nuts....

I think you guys are all nuts, or bordering on it.

After you handle these parts, striping the lead off and re-tinning, many
if not most of the parts will be damaged or stressed from handling, ESD,
heat, and then you need to figure how to verify all the lead is out;
And, you don't even know how many will survive without delaminating in
the higher reflow temperatures.

Just my thoughts..

I don't think you are right. The tinning is done after the packet is
moulded, in my experience. It would be very hazardous to mould a
thermosetting polymer over a tin-lead alloy, which can easily creep,
destroying the hermeticity.
