Hi All,

I am checking in Israel the possibility to share our RoHS tests and other
companies RoHS tests in a bank of tests results which will be managed by
well known Laboratory institute (like the Israeli std. Institute) and all
the "members" will be able to share the results.
The payment for the membership will be according the costs of the tests and
the number of members.

I believe it can be a world wide sharing so to RoHS tests and reply of
results will be fast and with reasonable cost.

If each company will perform their own tests, its will not be possible to
cover all the components, suppliers in a cycle of one year.

Best Regards

Ioan,
Some level of incoming inspection for RoHS compliance will be a reality,
no matter how many CoCs you have.

Whether you as an OEM or your EMS does it, depends on how your contract
is worded.

For the handheld analytical XRFs - Niton, Oxford and InnovX and another
that Phil Nuttig mentioned here about two weeks ago. For benchtop units
there are Fischer, Shimadzu, Elvatech (Ukrainian) and Oxford (read
Horiba for RoHS compliance). ThermoNoran make them, but I did not find
the people I talked to very knowledgeable about RoHS. And I am sure
there are quite a few others out there as well.

Chromium (irrespective of oxidation state) can be found by XRF (if they
can go low enough in the periodic table), AA and ICP-OES and even bench
titrations can do it. But specifically for Cr (VI) the method listed is
UV-visible spectroscopy.

The brominated fire retardants are going to be tricky. XRF will show
Br. But how is bonded in the product? And is a part of an allowed fire
retardant (or at least not yet banned one)? Gas chromatography/mass
spec (GCMS) is the way to go, but whether you buy one yourself or get it
done outside, it is going to be $$$$. I have been quoted $300 (US) per
sample (ignoring "volume discount" - as if I will be a lot at that
price!!).

If you are referring to the doc by the task group set by the EU to look
at analytical methods, no, it is not approved, but it is as close to an
official doc that I know of.

Subject: [LF] Incoming inspection for RoHS compliance

Hi Lead-free gang,

how do you see the very near, too near, future of the incoming
inspection? Will an EMS be responsible for checking the material, or
it's rather the responsibility of the OEM to control the material
through compliant AVLs and certificates of compliance from the
suppliers? Of course the EMS will make sure to use lead-free materials.

Now, in case the EMS will decide to inspect for RoHS compliance, what
equipment is out there, that I could check? I only know of the hand
helds from Niton that check for the metals, but not for the pbde and
pbb.

And, in the same line, the testing procedure available on Soldertech's
web is still valid? Was it approved? Should I base the assessment of
test equipment on the methods in this procedure?

Thanks,
Ioan
