The Massachusetts Legislature recently funded the Toxics Use Reduction
Institute to conduct an alternatives study for various uses of lead (as well
as four other toxic chemicals). Since there are hundreds of uses of lead,
we got input from Massachusetts stakeholders (industry representatives,
government agencies, and public health, environmental, and labor advocates)
to determine the most important uses to focus on. Based on this input the
study focused on ammunition for shooting ranges, weighting applications such
as fishing sinkers and wheel weights, and heat stabilizers for PVC wire and
cable coatings. Lead in electronics was not chosen because it represents a
small fraction (0.5%) of the total use of lead, and lead-free alternatives
studies were already underway in advance of the RoHS deadline.

An objective assessment was conducted for the lead and lead-free
alternatives for ammunition, weighting applications, and heat stabilizers in
the following areas: health & environmental effects, technical feasibility,
and financial feasibility. The results of the study can be seen at the
following URL:

Greg Morose

Shotgun charges have had to be lead free for some while now when
shooting over water - same issue as with lead fishing weights.

Indoor gun ranges have to have extract to prevent inhalation of lead
dust created on the back stops.......... so it's not entirely laughable.

Regards,

Chris
