Tried to post this but it bounced back. Here is a second try.

Subject: Re: [LF] Lead Shielding in Subject EEE

We have wrestled with the High Voltage exemption clause in the RoHS
directive as it, to us, is very vague. There is lots of room for
interpretation. We interpret is the input voltage to the whole system.
I don't know of many systems that have an input of 1000 Vac or 1500 Vdc.
OK, operating voltages is another thing and at that point all our
products would be exempt. The "experts" I have spoken with have NOT
implied it is the whole system operating voltage that determines the
exemption.

If sheet lead shielding is not exempt, then any non-medical x-ray system
is not exempt. So the x-ray inspection systems, baggage inspection
systems and other x-ray generating systems.

I'll get off my soap box now.

Ummm, x-ray and high voltage are partners, aren't they? Semantics,
anyone?

If it is exempt, I can't find it. I should stick to the voltage
exemption.

I was under the impression that sheet lead for x-ray shielding purposes
was exempt from WEEE and RoHS.

Folks: Let's say lead sheeting is used to contain x-rays in a piece of
equipment which is arguably EEE. Would we agree that that sheeting (and
any alloy in the equipment not meeting the specific characteristics in
the exemptions in RoHS Annex #6) would be fully subject to RoHS and
would cause the equipment to be non-compliant with RoHS?

Thanks! jw

!! God Blesses !!
