Dear IPC LF Listservers and Mr. NA/NY DDave,

First I would like to thank Mr. DDave for his interest in enquiring about my interests in Lead-free technology.

I am a Graduate Student and Research Assistant at Center for Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (CEMA) at RIT. Please feel free to visit our website at http://www.rit.edu/~smt/v2/ for more information.

We have developed a Lead-free Compendium which aims to educate and answer questions related to Lead-free technology. The book is nothing but a summary of all (most of) the lead-free research carried out so far. The book is under final corrections and will go to print soon.

The interesting point is that we came up with a chart which gives reliability information for various lead-free materials. We compiled the available information in a tabular form based on Solder/PCB finish/component finish combination for various tests (lead contamination, pull test and fatigue life). The chart lists the information across various components.

When we finished the chart we were able to see a lot of gaps (lack of data) in the chart. This kindled an interest in me in finding the answers since this is the information the industry is looking for. I have already suggested this topic as my thesis interest to my advisor (Prof. Ramkumar, Director for CEMA). Our goal is to generate as much information as possible by performing experiments using either DOE or Taguchi techniques.

Once we get sufficient funding, we will pursue this quest and the results will of course be shared with the industry. I welcome your valuable comments and suggestions regarding the same.

Thank you,

Sincerely

Santhakumar

P.S: I am walking this Commencement, is your daughter walking too?
