Quitin,

When you state 'Lead Free is evil' you are also stating a sort of political
and personal view point. It seems this forum has been taken over (partly) by
anti-LF folks. When you look at the data presented at various conferences
and study the published material it seems that:

1. LF is better than SnPb when stresses are low and medium intensity.
( A large majority of product applications fall in this category)

2. Under highly stressed conditions like aviation, SnPb joints are
better LF joints.

Several papers on LF reliability and comparison with SnPb joints by people
like Dr. John-Paul Clech, Dr Craig Hillman, K. Sweatman of Nihon Superior
and others have stated these observations. Dell has shipped > 30 million LF
products of various types (notebooks, Desktops, Displays and Printers) as
mentioned by Dr. Randy Schueller. These products are performing as well as
SnPb products or better according to him (November 2006 CTEA presentation at
Austin, Texas).

In any new technology, there are problems initially which are resolved as we
learn more about related design, material and processing issues.

No body is being forced to go LF. It is a simple business decision; if one
wants to play in global economy then one has to follow what the customer (an
individual, a company or a country) wants. If US companies think LF is not
in their interest, they can continue SnPb production and simply sell the
product in US market only and not in EU.

Have a good day!

I agree. But I think we could do better to avoid it the next time around by carrying on those discussions in political or environmental forums, since while we're all trying to make this stuff work, the politicians are busy passing laws about things they don't know enough about, and the environmentalists are busy influencing politicians to pass those types of laws. My point is, (and I should have been clearer in my original response), that the people we really need to convince this is a bad idea aren't in this group; they are in political, environmental, and consumer groups. I suggest we each corner an environmentalist and convince him or her about the evils of lead-free solder. 'Nough said. I was merely trying to avoid a discussion of why we're in this lead-free boat to begin with. Since it's already upon us, it pretty much doesn't matter how we got here, only how we get out. Hopefully the industry will be more proactive the next time something like this comes up. Again, my apologies. I know of good people that had to leave NIST because their technical findings in an investigation did not align with the prevalent political view.
