The XRF machines Moto used to check gold plating thickness on substrates
I think was accurate on .68 mm diameter pads, I think equipment is
available down to .04mm.

XRF's need around 1" sq surface area to work on which eliminates their

Forgetting the Spot Tests for a minute, how about these hand held XRF
units
that your links to SMART testing also found unreliable.
I just fast read, I believe the complete IEC test document 7x pages,
that
indicated that portable XRF units were fully acceptable.
